Your first visit to an osteopath can feel a little unfamiliar, so here’s what to expect. Your first appointment lasts 45 minutes and takes place at our clinic in Manchester city centre, behind the Central Library.
Osteopaths don’t only treat back and neck pain. We work with the whole body, from head to toe.
Before your appointment
You don’t need a referral from your GP to see an osteopath. You can book online at any time, or call 07866 705385.
It helps to bring a list of any medication you’re taking, and any scans or test results related to your problem.
To examine and treat you properly, we’ll usually ask you to undress to your underwear. If you’d feel more comfortable, you’re welcome to wear shorts or loose sports clothing instead. Towels are always provided to cover any areas that aren’t being treated, and you’re welcome to bring a friend or family member with you.
1. Talk
We start with a conversation about your problem or injury, your medical history, any medication you take, and your work, lifestyle and exercise routine. This usually takes around 15 minutes, though it varies from person to person.
2. Assess
Next, we look at how you move, not only where it hurts. We use orthopaedic tests and palpation, which means feeling with the hands to assess your muscles and joints and find areas of tension or tenderness.
3. Treat
Treatment is hands-on and may include massage, stretching and joint mobilisation, depending on what suits you best. We’ll always explain what we’re going to do and check you’re happy before we start, and we’ll make sure you’re comfortable throughout.
4. Plan
At the end of the session, we’ll talk you through a treatment plan, along with advice and exercises to help you recover. Some problems clear up in just a few sessions, while others take longer or benefit from regular maintenance.
No pressure, just honest advice
We’ll never pressure you to sign up for a set number of sessions. We’ll tell you honestly what we think is best and what we can do for you. If you’d like to save money, you can choose to buy a course of five treatments in advance.
If osteopathy isn’t the right answer
Sometimes muscle and joint pain isn’t the root of the problem. If that’s the case, we’ll explain what we think is going on and, with your permission, contact your GP to request any tests you may need.
